Summary

Still appearing on the Publisher's Weekly bestseller lists, this invaluable guide to finding happiness in difficult times is now available in massmarket for the first time。 Pema Chodron reveals the vast potential for happiness, wisdom and courage even in the most painful circumstances。 Pema Chodron teaches that there is a fundamental opportunity for happiness right within our reach, yet we usually miss it -- ironically, while we are caught up in attempt to escape pain and suffering。 This accessible guide to compassionate living shows us how we can use painful emotions to cultivate wisdom, compassion and courage, ways of communication that lead to openness and true intimacy with others, practices for reversing our negative habitual patterns, methods for working with chaotic situations and ways to cultivate compassionate, energetic social action for anyone -- whether they have a spiritual path or not。 Her heartfelt advice and wisdom (developed in her 20 years of practice as a Tibetan Buddhist nun as well as her years previously as a normal 'housewife and mother') give her a wide appeal。 This advice strikes just the right note, offering us comfort and challenging us to live deeply and contribute to creating a more loving world。

I gather this book is helpful to some people。 I’m not one of them, and I have no idea what would be helpful about it。

Truly excellent。 My latest chapter a morning book (skipping a number of mornings)。“All things are workable。”

Gran libro para resonar con la realidad y como llevarla a cabo en los momentos mas duros, como dar apertura en mente y espíritu para cambiar nuestras creencias ante el sufrimiento

A recommended reading this during transitions in life。 I read this while preparing to retire it provided me a spiritual hand to the next part of my journey。

An OK book。 Nothing I would highly recommend。 It was a quick read, although I could not see a red line which made it a little tiresome to read。 I guess I learned some about Buddhism and meditation。 There are a few aspects about openness and patience I liked and I will also take the basic thoughts behind Samsara and Samaya with me。

It took me a full 4。5 years to actually finish this book because my brain struggles with nonfiction。 I've been recommending it to any and everyone that whole time, and I strongly recommend it to you。 It took me a full 4。5 years to actually finish this book because my brain struggles with nonfiction。 I've been recommending it to any and everyone that whole time, and I strongly recommend it to you。 。。。more

。。。more

A treasury of wise words to be read and reread, lovingly gifted to me by a dear friend。 Experiencing trauma, living through mourning, and learning to deal with grief are all understood more deeply by reading this book。 It will be on my bedside table permanently。

Great book which I found very helpful at one point in my life。

I can't judge Chodron on her interpretation of Buddhism。 I can only say that to me, this book ranged from "blah" to actually depressing, and certainly didn't motivate me to meditate or change my attitudes at all。 As I understood it, she seemed to be saying things like "loneliness hurts, but you can learn to be at home and comfortable with your loneliness" - and ditto for physical pain and other kinds of suffering。 I also expected more on the subject of compassion, and how showing compassion to o I can't judge Chodron on her interpretation of Buddhism。 I can only say that to me, this book ranged from "blah" to actually depressing, and certainly didn't motivate me to meditate or change my attitudes at all。 As I understood it, she seemed to be saying things like "loneliness hurts, but you can learn to be at home and comfortable with your loneliness" - and ditto for physical pain and other kinds of suffering。 I also expected more on the subject of compassion, and how showing compassion to others improves your own situation。 I have read other books on Buddhism by Western Buddhists, and some of them really motivated me to get back to meditating and improve my life, but this one didn't。 。。。more

I should probably listen to this at least once a year until I can truly welcome groundlessness。 Buddhist teachings are a balm for my myriad shortcomings and neuroses。

I DNF this。 I dunno if I'm at the stage of anger at stuff or what but I had little patients with stuff like meditating and not many of the points that the author had could really apply to to why I wanted to read self help books I DNF this。 I dunno if I'm at the stage of anger at stuff or what but I had little patients with stuff like meditating and not many of the points that the author had could really apply to to why I wanted to read self help books 。。。more

I have read this book multiple times over the past 2 years。 Everytime I read it, in a new state of self, my current version of myself learns something new or identifies something differently。

One of my favorites。 Thought-provoking and gentle and unwaveringly committed to telling the truth。

An excellent companion for losing a parent ( especially at the outset of a f。。king PANDEMIC which also consumes your shared business venture )。 A real BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY book。

“If you want to see what has brought you to this point, look at your past thoughts and actions。 If you want to see your future, look at your present thoughts and actions。”

This book takes on a very difficult task: attempting to explain some of the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism in a way that can be understood by Westerners。 You will not attain instant enlightenment by reading it, but you will get some very useful advice and some tools that will help when things get tough。 I highly recommend it, especially for those with little knowledge of the subject。 If you can couple the wisdom of this book with some meditation practice of your own, so much the better!

Caitlin

There’s a lot of helpful information I want note。 Comforting in a challenging time。Some things I won’t swallow though。

This book continually caught me off guard。 I was expecting a certain message and got something different and more potent and relatable。 This had been recommended to many times and I resisted。 I'm glad I finally have read it。 Definitely one to come back to。 This book continually caught me off guard。 I was expecting a certain message and got something different and more potent and relatable。 This had been recommended to many times and I resisted。 I'm glad I finally have read it。 Definitely one to come back to。 。。。more

This book introduce Buddhist teaching in straight forward language。 Using analogies to explain concepts and teaching。 Overall this is an enjoyable light book that reminds us not just how to survive in this life but on how to live。

This book has changed my life, is going to continue to change my life。 It doesn't matter if you are going to take up Buddhism or not, Pema Chödrön has some great advice which we could all use。 She stays true to her tradition, while explaining it to an average person。 I know I will return to this book again。 This book has changed my life, is going to continue to change my life。 It doesn't matter if you are going to take up Buddhism or not, Pema Chödrön has some great advice which we could all use。 She stays true to her tradition, while explaining it to an average person。 I know I will return to this book again。 。。。more

Read as an audiobook。I feel like this book came to me at the right time。 Just a couple years ago I would not have been open to concepts like being awake to the world, full acceptance and compassion for yourself and others, and letting go of expectation and living consciously in the moment。 Right now I am in a big transition moment in my life and have been unknowingly applying and benefiting from some of these teachings。In a time when we are all in autopilot and distracting ourselves constantly t Read as an audiobook。I feel like this book came to me at the right time。 Just a couple years ago I would not have been open to concepts like being awake to the world, full acceptance and compassion for yourself and others, and letting go of expectation and living consciously in the moment。 Right now I am in a big transition moment in my life and have been unknowingly applying and benefiting from some of these teachings。In a time when we are all in autopilot and distracting ourselves constantly through our phones, this is an essential read in order to start really living your life and finding contentment in your every day。I really like it as an audiobook, but if you want to take it seriously you may want a physical copy to underline and annotate。 I will most likely do that and re read it, since it's difficult to take it all in when its being read to you。 。。。more

You absolutely have to be in the right frame of mind to read this。 I, perhaps, was not, but I appreciate the lovely nature and teachings it includes。 ——-“The way to stop the war is to stop hating the enemy。”
